With the world of agriculture technology changing by the day, a group of RC students participated in this year's Farm Robotics Challenge this semester (SP 2025). This competition tasked college teams with developing robotic solutions for real-world agricultural problems, demanding innovation and practical application of skills in areas like automation, AI, and engineering. Our students rose to this challenge, dedicating significant time and effort to design and construct their own robotic system aimed at tackling a specific agricultural need. Our team created an AI-driven classifier and detection model with the Amiga robot to automate grape/stone fruit cluster detection and counting for precise yield estimation. Reedley College competed mainly against four-year universities and definitely showed that they belonged.
This endeavor was made possible through the invaluable guidance and support of a dedicated cross-disciplinary faculty team. Special thanks to Dr. Emmanuel Abioye from our Engineering Department and Allen Vizcarra from AgTEC, who spearheaded this initiative, along with crucial support from Simon Sultana of Computer Science and Andrew Mancini from Welding. The student team itself was a wonderful representation of the diverse talent within Reedley College, bringing together individuals from multiple academic disciplines. The dedicated students who poured their energy into this project were Jesus Tadeo Vargas, Baltazar Hernandez, Cole Diquirico, Juan Heredia, Valaria Magana, Tanner Jones, and Gabriella Garcia.
While our team did not place in the final rankings, we are incredibly proud of the hard work, ingenuity, and dedication they demonstrated throughout the entire process. Their robot design and the accompanying video showcasing their efforts are a testament to their skills and the quality of education they are receiving at Reedley College.
