The Writing Center aims to:

Where is the Reading and Writing Center located and what are your hours?

We are located in Humanities 58. Our hours are 8 am to 4 pm on Mondays-Thursdays and 8 am to 12 pm on Fridays.

Who are the reading writing tutors at the Reading and Writing Center?

As of Spring 2016, we have 23 tutors. All of our tutors have completed required English coursework and Tutor training course work, and employed here because of recommendations by RC English faculty.

How much does it cost to use the Reading and Writing Center?

Walk-in appointments are free of charge. Enrolling in a group (ENG 272, .5 unit credit/no credit ) costs $23 per semester. Printing costs 10 cents per page, but is free to those enrolled in group tutoring.

Can I get help for a friend or family member?

Only students at Reedley College can use the Reading and Writing Center. If your friend or family member is a student, then yes, you can get help for them.

What if I just have a quick question about my writing?

Walk-in tutors are available at all times the Reading and Writing Center is open to answer any questions you may have.

Can I get a job at the Reading and Writing Center?

In order to be considered for a job as a tutor, you must have at least passed English 125 and have a GPA of 3.0 or better. Also, being recommended by a teacher increases your chances of being hired.



Making an Appointment


Who can make an appointment?

Any current student at Reedley College can make an appointment.

Can I request a particular writing tutor?

Yes, our tutors have designated walk-in times and you may schedule an appointment with the tutor during their walk-in time. What should I do if I need to reschedule or cancel my appointment?

If you need to adjust your cancel your appointment, give us a call at (559)638-0300 ext. 3619 to do so.

What if I am late to my appointment?

If you are more than five minutes late, the session will be marked as missed.

What kind of writing can I bring to the Reading and Writing Center?

You can bring any work that has to do with either reading or writing.

Will my instructor know that I have used the Reading and Writing Center?

Yes, we can stamp your paper to let your teacher know that you have visited us.

Is it okay for me to bring take-home exams to the Reading and Writing Center? No, if you receive any outside help on an exam without the permission of a teacher, it may be considered cheating.

Who can use the Online Reading and Writing Tutor?

Any student attending Reedley College.

Can I make face-to-face appointments as well as use the Online Reading and Writing Tutor?

Yes, you can utilize the online tutoring option, as well as receive walk-in tutoring.

How often can I submit something to the Online Reading and Writing Tutor?

As often as you would like.

What if I attached the wrong file by mistake?

Simply e-mail us and explain the issue, then re-upload the correct file.

When will a tutor respond to the draft I submit through the Online Reading and Writing Tutor?

A tutor will respond within 24 hours.

How do I know that a tutor has responded to the paper I submitted online?

The tutor will email you back and attach their response.

Who will have access to the material I submit in the Online Reading and Writing Tutor?

The only people who will be able to access the material are you and the tutor who reviewed your work.

How can I get the most out of my online tutoring session?

Be specific about any concerns or questions you may have, and ask the tutor if you have any questions.

What is the Reading and Writing Center’s mission?

Our mission is “to make better writers, not better papers.”

How will I know when my students visit the Reading and Writing Center?

We will stamp the student’s paper if they visited us.

I have one student who desperately needs help with writing. Can I require this particular student to visit the Center?

You can require the student to receive walk-in help or enroll in a group.

Should I make grade decisions dependent on Reading and Writing Center visits?

No, we are just here to help and grade decisions should not be based on visits to the center.

Are there alternatives to requiring students’ use of the Reading and Writing Center?

The Tutorial Center also offers help with reading and writing.

Do tutors at the Reading and Writing Center discuss grades with students?

No, tutors are not concerned with grades, but rather the material that the student needs help with.

Can students make standing appointments to work on overall writing improvement?

Yes, students can make appointments with walk-in tutors for any sort of writing help they may need.

Can students bring in non-course related work such as creative writing or personal statements for applications? Yes, students may bring in any type of reading or writing.

My students are working on a group project. Can the whole group come in for an appointment?

Yes, the group can schedule an appointment with the same or different tutors.

Does the Reading and Writing Center help students with take-home essay exams?

No, tutors at the Reading and Writing Center do not help students with take-home exams.

My students can’t seem to proofread. Will you proofread papers before they turn them in to me?

We can help with certain grammatical errors, but we will not proofread the student’s work.

Do students need to have a full draft before they make an appointment? Some of my students wait until they have a full draft and then find they can’t get an appointment in time.

Students do not need to have a full draft. We will revise whatever work they bring to us.
